Yawi Pachi Women, Vendors of Health Products
Villagers call them Mama WaterGuard or Mama Neti. These are members of Yawi Pachi Women Group in Awasi Location, Nyando District. They are among hundreds people who have seen their lives transformed, thanks to the Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP) with support from PSI/Kenya and other organisations.
“Before joining SWAP, we used to sell sisal ropes, clay pots and other household utensils. We have since added WaterGuard, mosquito nets and other products to our stocks,” says Berlien Otieno, the group’s Chairlady.
Yawi Pachi Group members are also beneficiaries of a savings and loans scheme that has enabled them to meet diverse financial needs at household level. Through savings from her sales Berlien bought a goat. Her dream is to one day own a herd of livestock.
Berlien reflects, “In the past, cases of Cholera were prevalent in the area, but since introducing the safe water products we no longer experience such cases.”
The group sells more than 250 (150ml) bottles of WaterGuard every week and some 50 boxes of the products on monthly basis.
